Amazon Associate Policy Update: No "Double Dipping" Using Multiple Commission Tags

AffiliateAmazon Associate Policy Changes December 20, 2024 Multiple Commission Tags marketing technology and policies can be complicated and confusing and we're here to help! This post outlines an important change to Amazon's Associate policy related commission tags which took effect on December 20, 2024.

One commission, one Amazon link

In this latest update, Amazon clarified its position on having multiple tags that measure commissions on the same link. Every associate has their own unique tag which is used to give credit to the associate when a sale is made.

In a similar fashion, brands also have their own unique tags for measuring sales when promoting their store and product listings on social media and other marketing channels. The brand's measurement tag is part of the Amazon Attribution platform for sellers.

Until now, both tags could be on a single Amazon link which allowed both platforms to measure and attribute credit for the sale. That means the associate would be paid an affiliate commission while the brand could also measure the same sale and give the associate an extra 'bonus' commission.

The policy now states that there can only be one tag on the link to measure the sale - either the associates tag or the brand's tag.

Helping Amazon Associates Comply with Amazon’s Multiple Commission Tag Policy

URLgenius helps Amazon Associates comply with the new policy by checking every link to make sure it only has one commission tag. If you enter a link with two commission tags into the URLgenius composer, you'll receive a warning. Here’s an example:

If you see this warning it's best to check the link and perhaps make the link again. If you have questions about a link that's displaying this message you can always reach out to us. We're happy to help even if you're not currently a URLgenius customer.

How did that extra tag get on my link?

You might be wondering how two commission tags were added to your associates link. Unfortunately that may not always be clear.

Which tags are on the link at the moment you enter it into Amazon SiteStripe depends on how the original link was created, shared, copied and pasted as well as which Amazon tool or marketing program the link originated from so it’s hard to say.

In addition, before the policy change, there were third parties that previously enabled links to have both commission tags (Amazon Associate and Amazon Attribution). There are various tools and platforms that could have added the extra tag and perhaps even without the Amazon associate’s knowledge. The link could have been created before the policy was put in place.

If you’re copying and pasting older links from another platform or from a list you’ve used in the paste, it’s best to enter them into the URLgenius composer to make sure there’s only one commission tag.
